Het fort met zijn omgeving is de directe aanleiding voor de keuze van het thema RETREAT. Het fort heeft zijn oorspronkelijke functie verloren en de beleving van de ruimte en de plek is hiermee veranderd. Het fort is van een verdedigingswerk verworden tot een idyllische plek; deze transformatie vormt het uitgangspunt van de tentoonstelling. Het thema sluit nauw aan bij de sociaal-economische realiteit van vandaag, hoewel thema al geruime tijd voor het uitbreken van de huidige wereldcrisis werd vastgelegd. Van Berkel en Bos zijn al lange tijd geïnteresseerd in het onderzoeken van ruimtes en plaatsen die de functionaliteit ontstijgen en de realiteit oprekken.

The fort and its surroundings form the starting point for the theme RETREAT. The fortress has lost its original function, whereby the perception of place and space has changed. This transition from defense post to idyllic place forms the premise of the exhibition. The theme, although reflecting today’s socio-economic realities, was in fact chosen prior to the current global crisis. For a long time van Berkel and Bos have been interested in exploring places and spaces which extend function and stretch reality.
