The competition brief for the extension of the ‘Bauhaus archive, museum of design’ in Berlin (Walter Gropius, 1964), concerned 800 m2 exhibition space for permanent exhibitions, 400 m2 exhibition space for temporary exhibitions, plus museum shop, café and supporting spaces. The new exhibition spaces are mainly underground except for the café, that with its shell-shaped roof structure opens up to the square in front of the museum. The lower lying spaces are linked to one another by a circulation element formed of several strips, which structure the building, at times disappearing below landscape level and at other times rising above it.
