Talee Isetan

Facade Renovation, Kaohsiung, Taiwan, 2008–2009

Following the completion of the Star Place shopping plaza in Kaohsiung in 2008, UNStudio was comissioned to re-design of the façade of the neighbouring Talee Isetan building. The aim of the design is to forge visual links with the Star Place building, whilst simultaneously affording the Talee Isetan building its own individual identity and display towards the city. The Talee Isetan system of panels follows the vertical structure of the existing wall pillars. The horizontal divisions on the east façade - facing Star Place - become vertical as they cross the north face to the west side of the building. This twisting of lines from horizontal to vertical, coupled with the variation in the dimensions of the darker spaces between the panels, results in the underlying curved pattern.
