The Jewish Historical Museum consists of four synagogues which were brought together to form one museum. The aim of the renovation is to unify these disparate elements, whilst maintaining the original, individual functions and character of the different buildings. The buildings are linked by means of a unifying colour scheme used in the connecting spaces, while the individual character of the spaces is emphasized through exhibition design. The cellar under the New Synagogue has been excavated to provide 400 m2 for a new climatized print room and an auditorium for films and lectures. The New Synagogue also accommodates a changing programme of exhibitions, a permanent exhibition and a larger museum shop. In addition to this a media café, a children’s museum and a new entrance to the complex have been added.
