Education Executive Agency and Tax Office, Groningen

More than seven months after the start of construction of the Education Executive Agency and Tax Offices in Groningen, the building has now reached its highest point. The elevator cores of the new office building are now clearly visible from various places in the city and its surroundings. Reaching the highest point was celebrated on Wednesday September 16th with a festive gathering for all the project stakeholders.

The floors around the lift cores are also now under construction. The masonry of the lower tower is expected to be ready late this year, with completion of the tower expected in May 2010. At the end of 2010 a start will then be made with the placing of the horizontal "fins" around the building. These fins limit direct sunlight from entering the building, reducing the need for cooling and therefore reducing energy requirements.

The fins also ensure that the building receives the desired amount of daylight, thereby saving on the use of artificial lighting. The design of the fins varies in length and size, depending on the position of the Sun. The building is expected to be realized in March 2011.

The project includes the design, construction and financing of the new office of the Education Executive Agency and the Tax Offices (47,000 m²), including the management and maintenance of the building and care facility services for a period of 20 years. The building will provide approximately 2,500 workstations, parking for 675 cars and 1500 bicycles – for the most part located in an underground parking garage. Above the parking facilities will be a large public city garden with fountain and a multifunctional pavilion with commercial functions.
