Concrete Architecture Award 2008

The jury of the Concrete Architecture Award 2008 selected the Mercedes-Benz Museum as one of three award winners in this year’s competition.

Over 110,000 tons of concrete were used to build the museum which was realized in 2006.

The Concrete Architecture Award was created in 1974 to honour out-of-the-ordinary concrete constructions. Alongside the optimum combination of design and construction, the most important criterion for the award is the harmonious integration of the building into the surrounding built-up area or landscape.

Jury comments: “A very special construction assignment was realized with very special means. The museum building is the first concrete construction ever to have been designed, developed and computed in its entirety by means of new planning technology and computer assistance with 3D programs.”

“In construction also, the architects and engineers refrained from evading technical difficulties. One example is the development and realization of doubly-curved exposed-concrete walls with completely new formwork and concrete-placing techniques. The Mercedes-Benz Museum is an extremely sophisticated project which revolutionized concrete construction while at the same time being a convincingly emblematic museum building.”

From 121 applications, the jury selected another two award winners alongside the Mercedes-Benz Museum and awarded four honorary mentions. The award ceremony will be held on June 27th, 2008 in Berlin.
