Charles Jencks Award

Ben van Berkel & Caroline Bos have been awarded the Charles Jencks Award, which is presented annually to the individual who has recently made a major contribution both to the theory and practice of architecture. As the winner of this international award, Ben van Berkel will be giving a lecture at RIBA, in Jarvis Hall at 18:30 pm on 16th October.

Jury citation: 'UNStudio has consistently developed an architecture from the morphological investigation of formal types that change and are the result of urban dynamics. From the Moebius House to the Mercedes Museum, their work has used the diagram of forces to explore new models of flow and materiality. In these two buildings the conceptual diagram is convincingly translated into a built project, just as in their two books, Move and Design Models, built projects are smoothly translated into ideas. Seeking the universality based on morphing opposites into a seamless whole, their favorite image of the “manimal” – half man, half animal - shows a new way of conceiving pluralism that is subtle and pleasurable.'
