Westfield White City is one of the largest shopping malls in Europe, housing international brand stores, world-class boutiques, catering outlets and cinemas. The design for the interior of this extension to the mall seeks to combine both contemporary and traditional design elements. Emphasising on a curated shopping experience is key to all of the design components.
The extension is centered around three main vertical traffic nodes that organise and direct the user. The first— the ‘public room’—creates a unique outside/inside experience by visually linking the exterior of the building with its interior. It does this by continuing the facade treatment as well as the paving from the outside into the extension and by providing clear flows with views over all floors of the extension. The main shopping space in turn continues the viewing relationship between all levels through its open structure. Additionally, the main shopping area incorporates large flexible spaces with multiple event spaces, while enabling changing atmospheres during different times of day via the bespoke glass roof. Finally, the transition space between the existing mall and the extension ends the extension and integrates it into the rest of the mall by introducing forms tying it back to the existing structures.
