UNStudio Wins Big at the 2020 Prix Versailles Awards

The Looking Glass facade in Amsterdam and two stations of the Doha Metro Network have been honoured in the illustrious Prix Versailles World Finale 2020.

The Looking Glass facade, designed by UNStudio for the renovation of PC Hooftstraat 138 in Amsterdam, was awarded the Special Prize in the Exterior category, while the Msheireb Station of the Doha Metro won the same prize in the Interior class.

The Al Wakra Metro Station, also part of the Doha Metro Network, was also named among the 2020 World Selection for passenger stations.

The Looking Glass facade was completed in 2019 and is a fusion between fashion and architecture. It is made up of three curved glass panels that flow down from the upper floors of the building mimicking cloth billowing in the wind.

The Doha Metro Network also opened in 2019, and features 37 stations spread across three lines running through the Qatari capital. It is one of the fastest driverless metro networks in the world, carrying passengers around the city at speeds of up to 100km/h.

UNStudio was enlisted to work on the concept design and the 'Architectural Branding Manual', in collaboration with the Qatar Rail's Architecture Department. This 2,000+ page document is an extensive set of design guidelines, architectural details and material outlines that enable the efficient design and construction of the metro stations while assuring the spatial quality and identity of the network.

The annual Prix Versailles started in 2015 and is aimed at promoting a better interaction between the cultural and economic.

This year saw 24 architectural projects from around the world awarded in seven categories: Airports, Campuses, Passenger Stations, Sports, Shops & Stores, Shopping Malls, Hotels, and Restaurants.
