UNStudio at Salone del Mobile 2022 - Presenting the 'Future Perfect' project and product designs by UNSx

At this year’s Salone del Mobile, UNStudio together with Foundation Fashion Research Italy, YAC Academy and in collaboration with Object Carpet, Kvadrat, Cesare Roversi and DeltaLight will be introducing the Future Perfect project. Additionally, Node+ and Soliscape, two products designed by and Ben van Berkel and developed by UNSx, UNStudio’s experience design team, will be jointly presented by LaCividina and DeltaLight during design week.

Future Perfect

UNStudio was invited by F.FRI and YAC Academy to collaborate on a project that would investigate the design potential for the fashion textile design archive of F.FRI. Inspired by this intriguing archive, the Future Perfect initiative explores potential design opportunities created by combining patterns from the archive with outdated products left over from manufacturing.

Rather than recycling leftover products, the concept is to repurpose them by combining, overwriting and altering them in such a way that their original properties are respected. As a result, the historical patterns are translated into new designs that enhances both the aesthetic and ethical values of the leftover products.

This project takes place in three phases.

It began with a six-week-long design studio with F.FRI, YAC Academy and a group of young designers from across the globe, during which, UNStudio, together with Kvadrat and Object Carpet, guided the them in the development of two different collections based on reusing the leftover collections of fabrics and carpets.

The second phase takes the form of an exhibition at the Milan Design Week in which a spatial interpretation of the overall concept is set to be presented. The exhibition, located in Isola Design District, will give a glimpse of how fashion patterns can be transformed into an immersive spatial design and how outdated carpet and textiles can take on completely new forms and functions. Additionally, the exhibition will also display the results of the abovementioned studio.

The third phase of the Future Perfect project will involve more detailed research and development where the concept is scaled up into a methodology to define guidelines for the use of different types of outdated products.

Products

UNStudio will also be showcasing two versatile product designs created by Ben van Berkel with our UNSx team: Node+ and Soliscape.

The Soliscape lighting and acoustic system will be installed to illuminate the modular Node+ furniture system, completing the concept of aesthetic and functional versatility by enriching it with technological details: from voice control to adaptive sensors. Thanks to these two product designs, the space becomes a compendium of aesthetics, functionality, comfort and versatility, tailor-made for the future.
