UNStudio Designs One of the Most Sustainable Laboratory Buildings in the World

UNStudio has designed One Helix, the highly sustainable new European headquarters for Neogene Therapeutics. The 6,515 m2 building - a combination of laboratory and offices with supporting functions and amenities - is being developed on the Amsterdam University Medical Centre (Amsterdam UMC) campus by Breakthrough Properties, a leading global life sciences real estate developer.

Construction has now started on One Helix and the state-of-the-art biotech research facility is due for completion in the summer of 2025.

The five-story Neogene Therapeutics Headquarters will be located on the campus of the Amsterdam UMC, one of Europe's leading medical institutions. The UMC is a campus that brings together physicians, scientists, researchers, entrepreneurs and businesses with the aim to improve patient outcomes in the clinical care environment.

Neogene Therapeutics (Neogene), a wholly owned subsidiary of global biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, is a clinical-stage biotechnology company pioneering the discovery, development and production of advanced T-cell receptor (TCR) therapies that target a broad spectrum of solid cancers.

Ben van Berkel, Founder & Principal Architect, UNStudio: “"This new headquarter building will strengthen Neogene’s ongoing efforts to pioneer the field of T-cell receptor therapies in a healthy and collaborative work environment that meets, and at times exceeds, the highest sustainability standards. We have also integrated biophilic design elements and natural materials into the design to supplement the technical system design and create healthy work and leisure spaces for all Neogene employees.”

Dan Belldegrun, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, Breakthrough Properties: "Breakthrough is excited to support the Neogene team in its efforts to make the potential benefits of T-cell receptor therapies available to more patients with cancer. By creating high-quality, sustainable environments, One Helix symbolizes Breakthrough Properties' mission to support cutting-edge science."

Destined to become one of the most sustainable laboratory environments in the world
The all-electric, net energy positive building is designed to maintain net zero emissions and has achieved BREEAM Outstanding certification. The design for One Helix also targets a low embodied carbon footprint, achieving an MPG score of ≤0.6.
