Visit our model archive

We have recently opened our model archive - located on the KNSM island in Amsterdam - to the public.

Originally intended to act as an inspiration space - where our architects and designers could learn about the history and design processes at UNStudio - our model archive has now been made accessible to the public by way of a twice-yearly series of changing exhibitions.

The inaugural exhibition, entitled ‘Hidden Treasures’, celebrates our 30-year history and takes us on a journey through a cross-section of models produced by the studio over the years. The exhibition includes over 50 models, ranging from handcrafted concept, paper and sketch models, through to process models and form studies that demonstrate the design development of a wide selection of projects, and on to our very earliest 3D printed scale models.

The projects displayed encompass all scales, ranging from urban designs, to buildings, to products, and cover the period from 1987 to 2019. Also included are very early sketches by Ben van Berkel.

Conceived and curated by Stijn Toonen and Patrik Noome from our model team, ‘Hidden Treasures’ is a celebration of model making, in all its forms, as an essential and integral part of the architect’s design process.

Future exhibitions are planned to zoom in on various key themes in UNStudio’s work, and will employ a variety of model types to demonstrate the essential role that model-making has played in the development of our design DNA.

Group visits to the archive can be booked with architour in Amsterdam.
