Solar Visuals: UNS Global Research Initiatives

Solar Visuals was founded in 2018 by UNS, the Dutch printing specialist TS Visuals and TNO.

This revolutionary cladding material builds on the outcomes of Construct-PV, an EU-funded research initiative focused on advancing Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) and DSD-PV, a research funded by the RVO. The project explored how energy-generating technologies could be seamlessly integrated into building facades, combining functionality with architectural expression. By leveraging collaboration across architects, PV producers, and construction companies, the research prioritised customisable designs that meet both technical and aesthetic requirements.

The resulting printed solar panels are designed to blend harmoniously with building surfaces, offering a high degree of customisation. These panels can replicate traditional materials, such as brick or stone, while achieving an energy efficiency of up to 85%. With a capacity of 220 watts peak (Wp) per panel, they provide a practical and visually compelling alternative to conventional solar panels.

An installation at Shell's headquarters in Amsterdam demonstrated the potential of these panels to transform facades into energy-generating assets. This real-world application reflects UNS' commitment to bridging the gap between research and market adoption, showcasing how renewable energy technologies can be integrated into the built environment to address future energy demands.
