Explore the UNS Model Archive

We are excited to announce that our model archive, located on the KNSM island in Amsterdam, is now open to the public.

Originally conceived as an inspiration space for our architects and designers to delve into the history and design processes at UNS, the archive has been transformed into a public venue. Twice a year, it will host a series of rotating exhibitions, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the creative journey behind our work.

The first exhibition, Hidden Treasures, celebrates UNS’s 30-year history, showcasing a cross-section of models that have shaped our projects over the decades. Featuring over 50 models, the exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the evolution of our design process.

From handcrafted concept models and paper sketches to process models and form studies, the collection highlights the development of a wide range of projects. It also includes some of our earliest 3D-printed scale models, offering a fascinating look at how technology has influenced our approach to design.

The projects on display span all scales—from urban designs to buildings and products—and cover the period from 1987 to 2019. Visitors will also have the chance to see early sketches by Ben van Berkel, providing a rare insight into the origins of some of our most iconic designs.

Curated by Stijn Toonen and Patrik Noome from our model team, Hidden Treasures is a tribute to the art of model-making. It highlights the essential role that models play in the architect’s design process, serving as tools for exploration, experimentation, and storytelling.

Future exhibitions will focus on key themes in UNS’s work, using a variety of model types to demonstrate how model-making has shaped our design DNA. These exhibitions will continue to celebrate the craft and creativity that underpin our approach to architecture and design.

Group visits to the archive can be booked with architour in Amsterdam. Whether you’re an architecture enthusiast, a design professional, or simply curious about the creative process, the UNS model archive offers an inspiring and educational experience.

We look forward to welcoming you to explore the stories behind our designs.
