In an exciting development for Sacheon, South Korea, TEOROO Co., Ltd and the Sacheon City Council have announced UNS’s design proposal as the winning entry in the international competition for the Namildae Resort.

This eco-conscious design seamlessly integrates with the natural topography of Namildae Beach, creating a luxury resort that harmonises with its surroundings. The resort will feature hotels, condominiums, villas, and a range of supporting facilities, all designed to offer a unique and immersive experience.

The winning proposal was unveiled at a project briefing session attended by TEOROO Chairman Woo Hee-myung, Sacheon City Mayor Park Dong-sik, and other senior officials. The design was unanimously praised for its potential to redefine tourism in Sacheon and to play a pivotal role in revitalising the city’s tourism industry.

Chairman Woo Hee-myung expressed his enthusiasm, stating: “We will spare no effort in creating a world-class hotel and resort that is unique in Korea, based on UNS’s proposal. We are therefore expecting strong support from the Sacheon City Council.”

Mayor Park Dong-sik added: “We expect to see this future-ready design still functioning as an exemplary reference in 2030. We will give our full support to the construction of the best landmark hotel and resort in Sacheon.”

Ben van Berkel, Founder and Principal Architect of UNS, shared his thoughts on the project: “We are delighted and honoured that our proposal has been selected for such a vibrant and identity-forming resort on South Korea’s southern coastline. Our eco-friendly design will not only have a sustainable impact on the environment and the economy, but it will also enhance the quality of life in the area by introducing new experiences that promote the well-being of both local residents and visitors.”

Hannes Pfau, Partner and Managing Director of UNS Shanghai and Hong Kong, highlighted the unique approach of the design: “We are extremely grateful for TEOROO’s and Sacheon City’s support of our proposal—a cascading architectural landscape that integrates the coastline with the surrounding mountains to create a one-of-a-kind destination. The design introduces a new type of nature-oriented luxury experience that complements the truly awe-inspiring site.”

UNS has a long-standing relationship with South Korea, beginning with the remodelling of the Galleria Department Store in Seoul in 2003. Since then, UNS has completed several landmark projects, including:

• YG Entertainment Headquarters (Seoul)

• Galleria Centercity (Cheonan)

• Hanwha HQ Remodelling (Seoul)

• I'Park City (Suwon)

• Daegu Wolbae IPark (Daegu)

Current projects include the Chungnam Art Museum, the Gyeongdo Island Masterplan, and the Korean National Football Centre in Cheonan.

The Namildae Resort is set to be completed in 2028, promising to become a new icon on South Korea’s southern coastline. With its focus on sustainability, luxury, and community well-being, the resort is poised to redefine the tourism experience in Sacheon.
