UNS is proud to unveil One Helix, the new European headquarters for Neogene Therapeutics, a project that sets a new benchmark for sustainability in laboratory design. Located on the Amsterdam University Medical Centre (Amsterdam UMC) campus, this 6,515 m² state-of-the-art facility combines laboratories, offices, and supporting amenities to create a space that fosters innovation and collaboration.
Developed by Breakthrough Properties, a global leader in life sciences real estate, construction for One Helix is now underway, with completion anticipated in the summer of 2025.
The five-story headquarters will be situated on the campus of Amsterdam UMC, one of Europe’s foremost medical institutions. This campus is a dynamic ecosystem where physicians, scientists, researchers, entrepreneurs, and businesses converge to advance patient care and clinical outcomes.

Neogene Therapeutics (Neogene), a wholly owned subsidiary of AstraZeneca, is at the forefront of biotechnology. As a clinical-stage company, Neogene is pioneering the discovery, development, and production of advanced T-cell receptor (TCR) therapies to target a wide range of solid cancers.
Ben van Berkel, Founder and Principal Architect of UNS, shared his vision for the project: “This new headquarters will strengthen Neogene’s groundbreaking work in T-cell receptor therapies by providing a healthy and collaborative environment that not only meets but often exceeds the highest sustainability standards. By integrating biophilic design elements and natural materials, we’ve created spaces that go beyond functionality—spaces that promote well-being and inspire innovation for all Neogene employees.”
Dan Belldegrun, CEO and Co-Founder of Breakthrough Properties, echoed this sentiment: “Breakthrough is thrilled to support Neogene in its mission to bring the transformative potential of T-cell receptor therapies to more cancer patients. One Helix embodies our commitment to creating high-quality, sustainable environments that empower cutting-edge science.”
One Helix is poised to become one of the most sustainable laboratory environments in the world. The building is all-electric, net energy positive, and designed to maintain net zero emissions. It has already achieved BREEAM Outstanding certification, a testament to its exceptional sustainability credentials.
The design also prioritizes a low embodied carbon footprint, targeting an MPG score of ≤0.6. This commitment to sustainability is woven into every aspect of the project, from its energy systems to its material choices.
