UNS’s Winning Design Selected for Turin Metro Line 2

UNS’s design proposal for Turin’s new Metro Line 2 has been selected by an international jury chaired by Dominique Perrault. Developed with Settanta7, Mijksenaar, Frigorosso, 3BA and WSP, the winning scheme rethinks the metro as a public place that connects neighbourhoods, supports daily movement, and gives the city a new, recognisable civic identity.
Rooted in Turin’s urban identity, the proposal draws on the flow of the Po and Dora rivers and the city’s 18 kilometres of arcaded porticoes. UNS, alongside the consortium, interprets this legacy as a new “urban river”, translating movement, openness, and continuity into a contemporary transit system that links history, public space, and everyday life.

The design is built around a flexible modular language that can adapt across the planned stations while remaining clear as one network. In the first design phase, covering 10 stations, this approach allows each location to respond to its surroundings without losing the consistency of the wider line. Mole Giardini, San Giovanni Bosco and Carlo Alberto show how this balance between network identity and local character can work in practice.

“For Turin’s new Metro Line 2, we wanted to create more than a transport system. We wanted to design a new civic connection for the whole city, one that brings Turin’s history and its future into direct conversation,” says Ben van Berkel, Founder and Principal Architect at UNS.
From station entrances and wayfinding to lighting, materials, and digital touchpoints, the proposal considers the full passenger journey. Durable finishes, warm interiors, and clear orientation help create a metro environment that feels intuitive, welcoming, and closely tied to the city it serves.
With this winning proposal, UNS shows how infrastructure can do more than move people. It can shape how a city is read, experienced, and shared.
