The design introduces a phased approach, beginning with immediate upgrades to safety and environmental conditions, such as reduced car lanes, temporary planters, and prioritised pedestrian spaces. By 2030, permanent landscape elements and shared surfaces redefine the street as an extension of public space, encouraging community use. By 2040, private vehicles are replaced by shared autonomous pods, and interactive technology is embedded into the streetscape, enhancing user experience and connectivity.
Key components include a healthy environment with green spaces, air purification, and electric vehicle infrastructure; future-proof mobility with adaptable layouts for evolving technologies; and social and physical safety through visibility, street furniture, and traffic calming measures. The design envisions Distelweg as a lively, inclusive space where people and nature coexist, offering a blueprint for streets that respond to the needs of their users and the planet.
