Lock Island Bridges

The bridges connect cars, bicycles, and pedestrians, with traffic flows separated across two decks. The upper deck accommodates vehicles and fast bicycles, while the shaded lower deck, closer to the water, is designed for pedestrians and recreational cyclists. The lower deck merges with pedestrian promenades, creating a continuous, shaded path around the canal’s tidal water features.

The design incorporates reinterpreted Arabic patterns, used for shading, wayfinding, and structural elements, unifying the bridges with their context. A central public space, resembling an oversized “eye,” serves as a focal point, reflecting water, sky, and the embankments. This feature creates diagonal views and gives each bridge a distinct identity while framing the surrounding landscape.
