UNS was tasked with redesigning elements that impact the tunnel’s aesthetics, focusing on the strutting system on the east side and the tunnel mouths on the west side, while collaborating closely with the Alliance. Key updates included replacing the old steel strutting system with a concrete structure, which was clad in anodized aluminum panels to meet fire resistance requirements.
Additionally, the previously visible sheet piling in the tunnel mouths was covered with precast concrete pre-walls, designed with custom shapes and patterns by UNS. These interventions not only ensure the tunnel’s compliance with modern safety standards but also preserve and enhance its architectural identity, maintaining its role as a critical piece of Amsterdam’s infrastructure.
