The design features an open landscape with spacious interiors, extensive views, alternative circulation routes, meeting areas, and a public plaza. The building is elevated above ground level, allowing for light, transparency, and sightlines to Gent’s iconic towers. Its layered structure minimises urban impact, incorporates green roof terraces, and reduces direct sunlight penetration.
An open central void organises the interior, enhancing spatial experience and orientation. This void connects functional clusters, links the library to the city, and serves as a metaphor for public engagement. Interaction with the surrounding water and promenade revitalises the Waalse Krook, extending the library’s role as a public space.
