Situated in the heart of the Museum Quarter, these two flagship store facades celebrate Dutch design and creative heritage while offering a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional Amsterdam townhouse.
Inspired by textiles, The Looking Glass transforms the facade of P.C. Hooftstraat 138 into a flowing architectural statement. Three curved glass panels cascade down the building, mimicking the movement of billowing fabric. This transparent design creates a dynamic interplay between fashion and architecture, unveiling the latest designs at pedestrian level while maintaining the vertical three-windowed division of the original townhouse.
The facade’s craftsmanship is evident in its structural glass boxes, which were pre-assembled and mounted on-site. Laminated low-iron glass panels are bonded with stainless steel edge profiles, ensuring precision and durability. Brick slips and metal strips integrate the glass elements with the surrounding brickwork, creating a seamless blend of modernity and tradition.
Next door, The Brick Pixelation at P.C. Hooftstraat 140-142 offers a more intricate interpretation of textiles. Cast stainless steel bricks with glass inlays form a partially transparent facade, creating a pixelated effect that reflects the craftsmanship of couture clothing. The stainless-steel veil transitions into anthracite brickwork on the upper levels, maintaining balance with Amsterdam’s architectural heritage.
The stainless-steel bricks, cast in varying sizes, are mounted onto steel frames and installed with precision. Glass inlays and tapered edges add refinement, while operable windows behind the facade ensure functionality. The residential entrance, crafted from the same stainless-steel bricks with opaque glass inlays, integrates seamlessly into the design.
Both facades embody the artistry of high-end fashion, blending form and function to create unique retail experiences. While The Looking Glass emphasises fluidity and transparency, The Brick Pixelation focuses on texture and detail. Together, they transform P.C. Hooftstraat into a showcase of architectural innovation, celebrating the craftsmanship and elegance of Dutch design.
