The Green Mile

The ambition is to transform the Stadhouderskade into The Green Mile: a green, safe, and future-proof street for people, plants, and animals. This revitalised space will invite residents and visitors to walk, meet, play sports, and experience nature, creating a meaningful connection between the city and its environment. 

The Green Mile is a collaborative movement initiated by the municipality of Amsterdam and key stakeholders, including the Rijksmuseum, Heineken, De Nederlandsche Bank, the Hoge School van Amsterdam, Blendingbricks, and UNS. By joining forces, these partners aim to restore the Stadhouderskade’s identity as a place for people, not just a thoroughfare.

The Stadhouderskade’s existing qualities—its beautiful trees, proximity to the water, and connections to small parks—form the foundation for its transformation. The vision includes:

- Reclaiming public space: Reducing vehicular dominance to create safe, accessible areas for walking, cycling, and gathering.
- Enhancing greenery: Expanding natural elements to support biodiversity and improve air quality.
- Reconnecting with water: Opening access to the canal by removing barriers like parked cars and houseboats.

The Green Mile is more than a design project—it’s a movement. With the foundations laid, the initiative invites everyone—residents, businesses, and visitors—to contribute to this shared vision.
