Transformation of Madrid Chamartín-Clara Campoamor Station Begins
:format(webp))
The Spanish Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has officially commissioned the drafting of executive projects to transform Madrid Chamartín-Clara Campoamor Station into an international benchmark for sustainable, multimodal, connected, and integrated mobility.
This ambitious project, part of the larger Madrid Nuevo Norte urban development, is a collaboration between UNS, b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos, and Esteyco, working together as the joint venture "Chamartín Ecosistema Abierto." The team was selected as the winner of the international competition organised by Adif AV to reimagine this critical railway hub.
Key Components of the Contract
The contract focuses on two main areas:
Global Basic Project Development
The joint venture will lead the development of the Global Basic Project, which will serve as the foundation for the station’s transformation. This comprehensive plan will integrate all necessary actions to bring the station into service, while respecting its historical vaulted roofs—an iconic feature of Chamartín Station.Construction Projects for Major Interventions
The contract also includes the drafting of construction projects to tender the works for the following key components:
New Northern Terminal: A state-of-the-art terminal will be constructed north of the existing platforms, including a northern covering, canopies for the Kiss & Ride area, and a taxi zone. The current station will serve as the Southern Terminal, creating a dual-terminal system that enhances passenger flow and connectivity.
Eastern Expansion and New High-Speed Tracks: The concourse will be expanded eastward, and six additional high-speed rail tracks will be added, increasing the station’s capacity to 18 standard-gauge tracks. This expansion builds on the station’s ongoing development, which has already doubled its high-speed rail capacity from 6 to 12 tracks.
Corporate Office Building and Parking: A new office building for Adif and Adif AV, along with parking facilities, will enhance the station’s functionality and provide additional amenities for users.
A Flexible and Phased Approach
The Global Basic Project will be divided into partial basic projects as deemed necessary by Adif AV. Additionally, three separate construction projects will be developed for the major planned interventions, along with a fourth project for a new ventilation shaft for the existing Pío XII road tunnel beneath the station.
This phased planning approach ensures a flexible execution, tailored to the station’s evolving needs while minimising the impact on railway services and the surrounding environment during construction.
UNS’ Vision for Chamartín Station
At UNS, we view this transformation as an opportunity to create a transport hub that is not only functional but also deeply integrated into the urban fabric. By introducing stepped terraces, urban balconies, and green spaces, the design fosters permeability with the surrounding city, creating a seamless connection with the new parks on either side of the station. Chamartín Station will become a porous, vibrant, and sustainable ecosystem where mobility, community, and nature thrive.
