The renovation of the 18 Septemberplein building in Eindhoven restores the historic C&A store while reconnecting it to its urban context. Located in the “City of Light,” the building’s identity had diminished due to modern developments obstructing its visibility and altering its original design.

UNS’ proposal reintroduces key elements of the building’s original character. Light vitrines are added to the facade, complementing the existing extruding windows on the north side. A glass plinth is incorporated at the base, creating a transparent and light appearance. The roof level, previously altered, is replaced with a crown-top inspired by the building’s industrial heritage. Constructed from dark glass with an exposed metal beam, the crown reflects the concept of the light vitrines.

Additional interventions include moving an entire floor to improve ceiling heights and integrating solar cells on the south facade and roof. A hanging garden is planned for the courtyard, enhancing the neighbourhood’s green space. The renovations also accommodate urban farming and a rooftop restaurant, creating new opportunities for community engagement. Throughout the construction, the C&A store remains operational, ensuring continuity for its users.
