The design integrates local characteristics by stacking diverse experiences vertically, visible from the street to blur the boundaries between interior and exterior. Inside, elements of outdoor street life mix with open-layout retail spaces and kiosks, creating a dynamic environment that invites visitors to wander through its levels.
The building’s undulating bands, inspired by its cylindrical tower geometry, define terraces, atria, and activity spaces, connecting the plaza to the street level. Vertical connections include a sunken plaza linking Huai Hai Road to the metro and stacked balconies leading to a roof garden. Lush vegetation throughout the terraces and outdoor spaces establishes a green urban landscape.
The facade features terracotta tiles with a metallic finish, referencing the Shikumen brick and complementing Huai Hai Road’s atmosphere. Inside, Shanghai’s magnolia flower motif is a central design element, appearing in backlit ceilings and columns that visually connect the building’s levels. Two large voids bring natural light and views into the interior, while the escalator void facilitates circulation and orientation, culminating in a rooftop garden dining experience.
Xintiandi Plaza offers a memorable lifestyle and retail experience, acting as both a destination and a gateway to Xintiandi.
